After all, making extra money changed my life.

Around five years ago, I was fresh out of college and stressing out about my student loans. I was also not too happy about how much money I was spending and I was not too happy about how much money I was not saving.

Then, a few years ago everything changed when I learned all about side jobs and the different things a person can do to make extra money.

Making extra money can change your life in ways such as:

  • It may help you pay off your debt;

  • It may help you save for things such as a vacation;

  • It may help you stop living paycheck to paycheck;

  • It may help you reach retirement sooner;

  • It may help you not feel as stuck at your job;

  • It may help you to become more diversified.

Whether you have just one free hour each day or if you are willing to work 40 to 50 hours a week on top of your full-time job, there are many options for you when it comes to the different ways to earn extra money.

2. Maintain yards – If you want to learn how to earn extra money, you can make money by mowing lawns, killing/removing weeds, cleaning gutters, raking leaves, and so on.

3. House sit – Housesitting is becoming more and more popular these days. There are many websites out there for housesitting. You might not always get paid, but you may be able to score a nice place to stay in a nice vacation spot. In many cases, you do get paid though to watch the house, water the plants, and so on.

4. Walk dogs and/or pet sit for extra money – If you love animals, then you may want to look into this. With this job, you may be going over to your client’s home to check in a few times a day, you may be staying at their house, or the animals may be staying with you.

5. Train pets – If you are good with animals, then you may want to look into training them for side money. You can help pet owners teach their pets how to behave better, do tricks, and more.

6. Groom pets – This is yet another side business related to animals, but it can be a good one. You could start a mobile pet grooming business where you go directly to the pets.

7. Answer surveys – Survey companies I recommend as one of the ways to make extra money online include Swagbucks, American Consumer Opinion, Survey Junkie, Survey Club, Pinecone Research, Opinion Outpost, Branded Surveys, and Prize Rebel. They’re free to join and free to use! You get paid to answer surveys and to test products. It’s best to sign up for as many as you can as that way you can receive the most surveys and make the most money.

8. Become an Uber driver-partner or Lyft driver-Spending your spare time by driving others around can be a great money maker. Read more about this in my post – How To Become An Uber Driver-Partner Or Lyft Driver. Click here to sign up to become an Uber driver-partner and start making money.

9. Scoop poop – Okay, this isn’t the most glamorous job, but someone has to do it. One of the ways to make extra money is to scoop poop for others, such as homes, businesses, and so on.

10. Shovel snow – If you get snow where you live, then you may be able to knock on your neighbor’s doors and see if they would like it shoveled. If you want to go a little further, you could even invest in a plow and market your services.

11. Babysit and/or nanny children – When I was just 14, I was making $10 an hour babysitting for a neighbor. I babysat 40 hours a week and it was a great way to make extra money! If you have any special skills or provide extra work, such as cleaning up around the house, teaching the child how to speak another language, picking up the child after activities, and so on, you will most likely be able to charge more than $10 an hour.

12. Help people fix things around their home – If you are a handy person, you may be able to get paid to repair broken items around a person’s home. This is one of the ways to make extra money that may be good for someone who is often asked to fix things anyways. Put your skill to use!

13. Clean homes – Cleaning is something that many people dread. If you are good at cleaning, then you may be able to find clients who want you to come to their home to clean. This is one of the ways to make extra money that can be good, especially if you love to clean!

14. Move furniture – Moving is another task that many people dislike. Movers can earn a broad range when it comes to hourly pay, but it’s usually somewhere around $50 an hour if you run your own business.

15. Takes photos of people, places, and things – Not just anyone can do this, as photography requires both skill and talent. However, if you know what you are doing then you may be able to turn your passion into a side business. You might be able to make money as a wedding photographer, portrait photographer, event photographer, and more.

16. Teach a skill – Is there something that you consider yourself an expert at that someone else may want to pay you to teach? This could include personal training, music-related, outdoor survival skills, water sports, and more.

17. Tutor on a subject – Similar to teaching a skill, you may be able to make money by tutoring someone. You may help someone with their homework, help them learn a language, prepare for an important exam, and more. My top recommendation for this is to teach english from home and earn $14-$26 an hour with VIPKID! They are in need of more tutors!

18. Wash windows – Many businesses out there outsource their window washing and this can be one of the ways to make extra money for you.. The work may not super pay well, but it can be done quickly with the right tools. Plus, if you have many clients located near each other than it may be well worth it.

19. Clean cars – I’m Facebook friends with a person who has a side business detailing cars. If you love cars, this may be a great side business for you.

20. Create balloon animals – Back when I was on a cruise last summer, I met a couple who traveled and lived on cruises. The wife was the ship’s full-time balloon animal person and only worked a few hours a day then got to enjoy all of the fun on the ship during her spare time.

21. Paint homes – If you are a good painter, you may be able to find people who are willing to pay you to paint the inside of their home. Painters where I used to live made around $25 an hour.

Find a part-time job to make extra money.

There are many, many part-time jobs out there that may be able to work along with your schedule at your full-time job as one of the ways to make extra money. You can find a job on sites such as Snagajob, Craigslist (yes, I’ve found a legitimate job through there before), Monster, and so on.

24. Bartend – If you have bartending experience, then you may be able to find a bartending job at a bar, a restaurant, a catering company, and more. Since usually the hours for this are later at night and on the weekends, you will probably be able to find a bartending job that works somewhat well with your schedule.

25. Work at a restaurant – You could be a host, wait tables, clean tables, and so on as one of the ways to make extra money.

26. Substitute teach – I know quite a few people who substitute teach both part-time and full-time and love it. Sometimes the schedule can be tricky as you may be called at the last moment, but other times you may secure a longer time frame position.

27. Work at a hotel, motel, hostel, resort, etc. – There are many jobs in the hospitality industry and this could be one of the ways to make extra money for you.

34. Deliver newspapers – Delivering newspapers can be a good way to make some side money. You may have to wake up early, but maybe those are the hours you are looking for.

35. Complete chores for others – Being someone’s assistant can be an interesting way to make money. Someone may pay you to do their laundry, clean their home, pick up their food, answer phone calls, and more.

36. Help a person with disabilities with day-to-day life – I know a few people who do this and they all say that it’s a very worthwhile job to have as you are making a meaningful impact on someone’s life. With this job, you might help a person shop for groceries, you might show them how to make meals, you might help them with their homework, help them find a job, and so on.

Make extra money online.

I am all about making income online in order to make extra money. You can work from the comfort of your home, usually on your own schedule, and you can be location independent and travel all over the world if you want to.

37. Help others with their resume – A little over one year ago, I interviewed a reader who ran a resume business. She showed us how others can learn how to make side money by helping others create great resumes so they can land their next job.

38. Edit articles – Blogs need editors! No matter how many times a person reads an article, something usually slips through. If you’re a grammar-nut, then this can be a great way to make extra money.

39. Manage social website accounts for others – Being a social media manager can be a fun job. Not everyone can do it but if you have social media skills then it might be something to look into. It’s not as easy as just sharing random content as you do need to create a strategy that works, but it can turn into a fun career if you are successful.

40. Help others start websites – If you are a tech-savvy, others may be willing to pay you to help them start their website. This can be a great way to make extra money if you have the skills to do so!

41. Use Swagbucks for your online searchesSwagbucks allows me to occasionally earn Amazon gift cards with very little work. Swagbucks is just like using Google to do your online searches, except you get rewarded points called SB for the things you do through their website. Then, when you have enough points called SB, you can redeem them for cash, gift cards, and more. You’ll receive a free $5 bonus just for signing up through my link!

42. Post on social media – If you have social media accounts, you may be able to make money by posting advertisements on your accounts. One company that is popular for this is Izea. You can learn more about making money through Izea here.

43. Write for others – Freelance writing can be a fun way to make money online if you enjoy writing. First, you will need to find someone to hire you. This means you will most likely need experience in order to gain experience. Don’t worry, it is possible. You can start by creating your own blog and writing on there first. This way future employers can see firsthand if your writing style will work for them or not.

44. Moderate forums – Some forums will pay you to moderate their message boards. If there is a forum you often visit, you might want to see if they are hiring.

45. Test websites – This is a relatively new way to make money online at home that I have heard about. is a website that pays you to test websites. You get paid $10 for each website you review and test, and $15 per website that you mobile test. You do not need to be a super technical person for this online job as they want real people to review websites to see what people really think.

46. Virtual assist – A virtual assistant helps a business run more smoothly. You can be contracted for one project (such as collecting data for research) or it can be a continuing job such as replying to e-mails and comments. Virtual assistant work can range broadly. Im earning extra money two ways…

1) Better and Tighter budgeting. Thats right saving a dollar is just as beneficial as making a dollar.

2) I lend money to folks who would otherwise have trouble obtaining a loan. I know it sounds risky and well I suppose it is. But the secret is to take advantage of local and personal factors that don’t exist in typical loan agreements. for example I have a loan investment that is two weeks old and worth 2700 today that has already yielded or paid 400 and is secured by a car title. This loan cost me 2655 initially and should be paid off with in 10 weeks. so 12 weeks total. annually that is over a 50% return i think. I know the borrowers situation. what he does, how much he gets paid, and his overall intentions.

I use to think giving folks credit card consolidation loans at like 12-13 percent interest plus maybe a little processing fee would be a good idea but what I found out through researching the idea is that folks who take those loans often start out with the best intentions but end up eventually falling prey to the temptation to start spending money via the credit cards they just paid off wth a loan. before you know it they are in twice as much debt as before.

Just a quick question to help myself, and others, understand your math here. You state you have a loan valued at $2700 and that it cost you $2655. That makes it sound like you’re making $45 interest, which I know can’t be correct. To simplify everything, how much did you loan out to this person in total and what is the agreed amount to be paid back? Also, how do you handle the collateral situation without some type of escrow company involved? Lastly, with the very strict and very numerous regulations that surround all financial industries and the regulations on the instruments / products they sell and provide, is all of this above board, legally? I wouldn’t want to have to take someone to small-claims court and then get burned because it wasn’t a legal transaction to begin with. Thanks for answering any of these that you can!

Like the list! I am trying out the UserTesting, I installed the program, but when it comes to record my sample video, it’s saying it doesn’t hear my sample recording. I don’t have an external microphone and am wondering if/where the internal microphone is on the computer? Sorry, I’m not tech savvy at all! Is there an internal microphone on the computer or do I need to get an external one and plug it in??

I know people always say that they can make extra money taking surveys, but I’ve never been successful with it. It seems I’m either not qualified for most of the surveys or I don’t actually get rewarded for the surveys I do take. Has anyone ever actually been successful with online survey taking? And how much can you actually make doing them!?

This is a really great list! Thanks so much for sharing! I also wanted to add that you can make money on if you have any graphic design skills or any funny sayings you can make tshirts and other products and post them for sale there. I’ve been doing it for maybe 4 years or so and I’ve made about $33,000 over that time period. Thanks again!

Nice work on this series, Pete and staff. Obviously you’ve engaged the readers and are “getting the juices flowing”. Once thing I struggle with is picking an idea and sticking to it. I guess you can use a combination of things, but I struggle with prioritizing my efforts. It would be good to explore methods for helping you prioritize and be consistent.

Hi Michelle, this message is coming from Nigeria. You are truly a rare gem and you are a godsend. I have been in a rut for months now battling with depression and trying to pick myself up and your blog inspired me to set up my own blog in order to share my story and my journey to recovery. I tell people about you a lot and about how you have changed my life. In just under a week that I resumed blogging I made $150/N50,000 all thanks to you. Thanks so much. I am your biggest fan in Nigeria. I hope I can somehow return the favor one day. Bless you.

Quite a comprehensive list. Let me quickly say that everyone needs to find out what he can do conveniently and not necessarily following others because they are successful in a particular niche. I tried the blogging niche and struggled for years without making anything tangible until I ventured into affiliate marketing. Now my affiliate blog is earning passive income for me, though not yet a super earner. Try your hands on a few things until you are able to discover what works for you. Once discovered, stick with it and you are sure to make money from it.

It’s always a beautiful thing in my personal opinion when people discover virtually unlimited ways to make money online potentially 24 hours a day. We didn’t have this type of opportunity growing up. The internet wasn’t into full swing yet. And side hustling wasn’t completely in fruition.

Going forward, I’m so happy there’s unlimited ways of virtually to make money online 24 hours a day. Looking forward to sharing this post on the blog income reports forum and referring my readers to check out what you have to say. Love your blogs! 🙂

There are a lot of very interesting and fresh ideas in here. I didn’t know you could rent out your car and I wonder what are the areas where you can do this – will have to research it more. I also remembered I have some old books that are just sitting there so will probably sell some soon.

On another note, although this is not something that can make money fast, what is your opinion on cryptocurrencies? I think that if you invest 5-10% of your income and are ready to wait 2-3 years, you can make a good ROI. I would also invest in a few altcoins and not just in Bitcoin. Would buy new coins monthly and only invest money I am willing to lose and I am willing to wait on for profits.

Wow, the most comprehensive list I’ve seen! I must admit I’ve gathered tons of inspiration!

I try to teach my kids in this, two things that they are doing and are pretty good ideas for kids: – they sell their old toys in in front of grocery stores. Why not online? Because during the weekend, when many people shop, they sell a lot of toys super quickly, in just 2-3 hours. Also the price sensitivity of the people is pretty low, compared to when buying online. – they sell home made cookies, again the same tactics as with the old toys and the same factors that lead to a success – good price, a lot of cookies sold.

I enjoyed reading the article about 75 ways to make money, and I will be looking around your blog for more information. I also signed up for the free email blogging course. I am skeptical of these days about anything free that promises to help you earn money, but maybe this will be different! The little that I have read on here seems to be full of sincerity!

Personally, I have recently used iVUEit. It’s an app where you get paid to go and take pictures of various properties and send them in. It’s legit, and they’re checking for how well the landscape is being kept up in most cases. The jobs pay from around seven or eight dollars per job up to about $20 is the most I’ve seen. It hasn’t been the best for me, but only because I live far away from any large metropolitan areas. I could resolve that by claiming a whole bunch of jobs in one area and just making it a day trip, but so far I haven’t had time to do that.

On a different note, was using IBOTTA for a while and I have accumulated over $70 on that. The only thing I don’t like is that you kind of have to go shopping on the app and pick out featured items before you go shopping so that’s very time-consuming.

Then I found Fetch! and I like it much better. You just take pictures of receipts and upload them; you get at least 25 points for each receipt that you upload and it automatically checks to see if you have something that’s worth extra. If an item is worth extra points, it can be worth up to 1000 or more points. I don’t do it as regularly as I could but I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half and I am up to 28,000 points. They pay you in gift cards, but they have gift cards anywhere from visa prepaid to Walmart to bed bath beyond and just about everything you can think of. 10,000 points equals a $10 gift card, 25,000 points equals a $25 gift card and so on.

Please excuse my punctuation and grammar in this post. I am usually very particular about those things, but I am kind of in a hurry right now.

Thank you so much for sharing all of these ideas! I have not heard of iVUEit – I will have to look into that.

You can’t be an animal trainer for pets without training yourself. This is completely irresponsible post and just ripe for animal abuse.
