Marketing on Tumblr is a Unique Experience
Marketing on Tumblr is a unique experience in terms of blogging. Unlike WordPress, you are potentially connected to every single person who uses Tumblr. One of the ways this works is through the tagging system. Every time you tag a post, it will show up in that tag when someone searches for it. This potentially leads to more followers, likes, and reblogs. Tagging is how your content gets noticed on Tumblr, and it's your lifeline if you're going to use Tumblr to promote your business. Here are some tips to get the most of out of the tagging system while you're marketing on Tumblr.
Do: Really Zone In On What Your Content Is About
Tags make marketing on Tumblr extremely easy since, in a sense, this is the website's built in SEO. If you're posting about your work with a major client, not only should you tag subjects that relate to what your business does, but their business as well. This will lead to potential clients from the same field or industry.
Don't: Get Overly Specific In Each Actual Tag
You want to keep your tags general. Why? The chances of someone searching the tag "biochemical engineering" are much less likely than someone going through the "science" tag. However, the advantage to being so specific is that you won't have much competition. The down side, on the other hand, is that no one might see it at all. If you want to, you can add both tags to the mix, but keep in mind you don't want to go hashtag crazy.
Do: Use As Many Relevant Tags As You Can
For example, if you're running a comic store you're definitely going to want to tag "comics." But it would be helpful and relevant to you to tag any comic companies if you're talking about new releases and any famous characters you might mention (Ironman, Batman, Superman, and the like). Any major concept, person, or activity should be tagged.
Don't: Create A Wall of Tags
When you post something on Tumblr, all users can see the tags you used on the post. Some Tumblr themes show your tags when someone's surfing through your blog. Nothing is more annoying than a post with more than ten or fifteen tags. There's no particular reason why it annoys people, it just does.
Do: Keep Track of What's Popular
The [http://www.tumblr.com/explore]explore page of Tumblr shows what tags are popular in the Tumblrsphere, keep track of them. They stay pretty consistent (Tags like "LOL", "Fashion", "Art" are always on the top of the list), but keep checking in case something you post relates to one of those tags. However, those tags are pretty saturated with content, so make sure your post stand out.
Don't: Post Content for the Sake of the "Popular Tags"
One objective of social media marketing, including marketing on Tumblr, is to try to capture what's going on at that moment. However, if your business isn't related to any of the popular tags, don't try to post content that will try to fit those tags.
If you do, people will know your blog as the blog that posts funny stuff or the blog that posts a lot fashion pictures, but not exactly whom your company is or what you do. If you do choose to have a tumblr blog for your business, I would suggest letting your hair down every once in a while (or once a week) and post something funny, cute, or relatable. Not only does that allow you to interact with users on Tumblr, but it proves your company can have a little fun (and that you're not all robots).
Again, tags are the lifeline of Tumblr, so they should be used wisely and diligently for marketing on tumblr. If you do, you'll be rewarded in the end.
